The City of Calgary Public Art Program, in conjunction with City of Calgary Transportation, invites Alberta-based artists to submit their qualifications to act as Documentary Filmmaker for the Martindale public art project.

The site of this public art project is an LRT Station situated in the heart of the Martindale community. A public artist has been commissioned to address the screening walls at this station and their concept includes a component of artistic fact-finding that combines insight with research and documentation, and explores site-specific history, subject matter, and events.

The City of Calgary wishes to have a documentary filmmaker create a short video that will showcase the process of developing this work of public art, including sharing the artists vision, the community engagement process, the design and fabrication, and the installation and unveiling of the work.

This project begins in January 2012 and will be completed in July 2012.

The total budget for the video is $15,000 CDN (inclusive).

BACKGROUND
Curator Jeanne Brasile seeks artwork that is made using algorithmic processes. While there is no generally accepted formal definition of algorithm, it could informally be understood as "a set of rules that precisely defines a sequence of operations." Using the above framework, the set of rules shall be the building blocks that define how an artwork will appear in its final form. It also defines the artists’ creative process. This practice is in opposition to an end result in which a pre-determined image is created through studies. Included artwork shall be a visual manifestation met by following a set of rules or instructions that dictate final visual form through specific acts of sorting, processing or enacting based on the collected data. Artwork is sought in all media to provide a broad interpretation of algorithmically based art. Although computer and digital art will be considered, this is not solely a call for digitally based media.

The Seattle Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs, in partnership with Seattle City Light, seeks an artist-in-residence to highlight City Light's conservation projects. Burton Barr Central Library seeking proposals for artist-made altars inspired by Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) for its @Central Gallery, located on the first floor.

In anticipation of Arizona's centennial in February 2012, this year's exhibit is titled, "Adorned in Memories, Written in Stone." The title is evocative of the ways generations of Arizonans have honored the memories of their loved ones in their hearts and in public spaces.  In keeping with this theme, artists are asked to reflect upon their subject's place in the mosaic that is Arizona history.   The memories of the lives of Arizona's daughters and sons, native and adopted, their loves, their causes, and heart aches, formed the past and shaped the future.

Details: Arizona residents 18 years or older may submit a proposal for consideration. While non-traditional altars will be considered, all altars submitted should reflect the theme and traditions of Día de los Muertos. Up to 10 proposals will be selected for exhibition by library staff.  Due to limited space, not all proposals will be accepted. Altars must be freestanding, no more than 3 feet deep by 4 feet long and no taller that 8½ feet; you must supply a table or base for your altar.  Anything placed on the floor must be contained within the 3 foot by 4 foot area to avoid creating a tripping hazard. Only artificial food may be used and no burning incense or open flame (lit candles) will be allowed.  Battery operated candles are a nice substitution. Please do not include valuable or irreplaceable items. Nothing may be taped, pinned or nailed to the gallery walls or ceiling.  Any part of your altar that needs to hang must be suspended from the hanging rail located a few inches from the ceiling. Artists must install and remove their altar on the dates indicated below and bring all supplies and tools needed to create/dismantle their altar.

From October 29-November 6, American Idolatry will transform the Invisible Dog Art Center in Cobble Hill, Brooklyn into a house of worship. Throughout the week, the public will be invited to view artworks and performances, and partake in evening educational programming, as curated by Legacy Russell and a diverse team of up-and-coming artists, academics, and cultural producers — the future of creative America. American Idolatry will make use of physical action, installation, and experimentation in all media to assert spaces of shrine-like religious artifice that, though constructed, will strive to function as “real” sites of idolatry, worship, and remembrance of America as influenced by pop culture aesthetic and contemporary politic. Whether displayed independently or as part of a greater assemblage, shrines take a multitude of forms, and material objects are socio-cultural unifiers and signifiers—they hold memories, they have the capacity to provoke emotion, and they imbue one with a sense of belonging, a sense of history. Thus, a shrine and the actions that accompany its presence are not only a portrait of their maker, but also a reflection of the complex global culture surrounding us.

Submissions are open to artists working in all media. Selections will be conducted by the Recession Art Jury led by Guest Curator Legacy Russell and Art Director Ani Katz. The submission fee is $20. Artists will be notified of acceptance by early August.

The human body is a popular subject for many reasons, the most obvious being that it is us. Throughout history the representation of the human form has been charged with tremendous energy, both positive and negative. Whether it be a religious edict that one 'shalt not' depict the human form – a taboo, or the glorious opposite, a revelation of mastery over form in the crafting of sensuous and nearly life-like physical human beauty, the art of the body has nevertheless moved us through time.

And through all the permutations art has experienced across history, work of the body persists. We use the human nude to master skill, understand ourselves, and push social and psychological buttons for the sake of expression (sensual, delicate, aggressive, etc.). We intend for Manifest's annual NUDE project to explore how our collective body is used today in art to achieve these goals and more.

This year we are excited to renew our invitation to artists to submit works in any media, of any style or genre (abstract, conceptual, highly realistic, etc.), and of any size, for consideration in Manifest's third annual NUDE, an international competitive exhibit exploring the uncovered human form in current art.

Inanimate. Inanimate objects, are, literally: objects not in motion.

Viewers imbue a still life with a deeper meaning. In a still life, one looks at an object and begins to fabricate a narrative around the object, charging it with meaning. Multiple objects placed together—in irony or symbolism, for example--generate layers of complexity as the objects themselves seem to spin a story. Food in a still life may be more than merely decorative- it might also imply impermanence and death.

For Inanimate, we are seeking the motionless as a way to express wisdom to the living. Objects that say something about us –about our journey and about how we see, live, work, love, and die in this world.

HERE provides space, equipment, box office services, and technical support. HERE will include the series on our website and in a weekly e-blast to our 14,000 subscribers. Desotorow Gallery announces a call to artists for “Photography Unseen,” an exhibition to be held Feb. 18 - March 1, 2011. Our culture is inundated by the photographic image. Everyday of our lives we face a multitude of varying photographs. Yet, we rarely contemplate the implications of a single picture. Instead, we have become desensitized and too often this rich form of information is taken for granted. Photography Unseen is an exhibition that invites artists to address this concern via a unique perspective, there are no photographs allowed. The subject is photography but all mediums except the photographic print may be included. Perhaps this strategy will spawn a more dynamic appreciation for something we encounter so often.

The juried exhibition “Photography Unseen” is open to national and international artists of all levels. To be considered, an entry form, entry fee, artist statement and digital images of the artwork should be submitted to Desotorow Gallery by 5 pm, Jan. 28, 2011.

For more than 120 years, the Oregon State Hospital has been Oregon's primary mental health facility. It is also notable as the location for the film One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. A core desire of the Hospital Replacement Project is to honor past patients of the facility. In particular, more than 2,500 unclaimed cremains of patients who died while living in the facility between the late 1880's and 1970's must be interred in an appropriate and dignified manner that speaks to the truth of the experiences of the people who lived and died at the hospital.

The art selection committee is seeking artists interested in creating a place of remembering, honoring and memorial for past patients. The memorial project offers artists an opportunity to transform a deeply meaningful history into a public work of great poignancy and beauty.

Budget: The total budget for artwork for this project is not expected to exceed $500,000.
Eligibility: All artists or artist teams are eligible to apply.
Selection: Applications will be reviewed by an Art Selection Committee. A short list of finalists will be invited to interview with the committee, for which they will receive a modest travel stipend. One artist or team is expected to be selected through interview.

Media Arts Center San Diego is now accepting submissions for our 2nd Annual Film Festival Poster Competition. for 18th Annual San Diego Latino Film Festival (SDLFF) in March 2011. This prestigious and internationally recognized festival celebrates films and videos by Latinos and/or about the Latino experience, screening over 160 works from across Latin America and throughout the United States. For the second year, the Festival is putting a call out to artists for its annual poster artwork. Artists of all backgrounds are encouraged to submit work for the Film Festival Poster Competition by November 19, 2010.
Late submissions will NOT be accepted.

Guidelines
The competition is open to all artists, and all submissions must be received by the deadline of November 19, 2010—5:00pm. There is no limit to the number of submissions entered, and there is no entry fee. The curators seek works by Asian women artists who have immigrated to the United States.

As an international center for art, New York City attracts artists from all over the world, many of whom deal with dual cultural, racial and national identities, and issues of separation from families and loved ones. In the city, one may experience culture shock due to peculiar living situations, and to different gender role expectations than those experienced in more male-dominated Asian countries. These experiences can be both funny and profound.
America is a place where one can escape one’s own circumstances and reinvent oneself. This has been particularly true for many women artists from Asia, where conservative social structures discourage women who deviate from the traditional trajectory of obedient daughter and devoted mother. The curators encourage women artists from Asia to submit work that specifically addresses the challenges of balancing their own hopes and dreams with expectations of society and family. Works should originate from personal experiences related to this transition.

Aaron Brothers Art & Framing will engage creative, self expressive teen, college and young-adults, ages 15-29, in the Body of Art wearable art competition, from now through September 25. The canvas they choose can be almost anything they can wear or carry and decorate with their own unique style – such as t-shirts, jeans and backpacks. Students can use Sharpies, Prismacolor pens, paints, or anything they want to create their art.

To enter, young artists can bring a 4x6 or 5x7 picture of their art to any Aaron Brothers store between August 5th and September 25th. Customers will choose store winners via in-store voting on October 1 and 2. We encourage entrants to invite all of their friends, fellow-artists, teachers and family to drop by the store where they entered, to support them and their art, and to cast their votes! All store winners will be posted on aaronbrothers.com/bodyofart for display.

Of the 145 store winners, ten finalists will be chosen by Aaron Brothers’ panel of judges. The finalists’ art will be posted on aaronbrothers.com/bodyofart for online voting, October 15-31. Los Angeles Art Association (LAAA) is committed to serving local artists of all media. Gallery 825 on La Cienega Boulevard is the exhibition arm of the organization. At this venue, LAAA hosts a wide variety of group shows, solo shows, lectures, workshops and artist talks. All LAAA exhibition opportunities are juried by regional and national (non-LAAA) art professionals - giving emerging artists access to the highest level decision makers in the art world.

HOW TO APPLY:

Applicants must bring:

1. Two original pieces of artwork created within the last 3 years.

Rules & Guidelines for submitting artwork are as follows:

· Framed work and work on paper/canvas must be no larger than 5' x 5' in either
direction.

· No rolled canvases will be accepted.

· Unframed pieces must be professionally presented in a portfolio, mounted or otherwise
protected.

· Sculpture must be no larger than 4' x 4' x 4'.

· Film and video pieces must be submitted on VHS or DVD.

· Installation work must be submitted in the form of documentation (i.e. slides,
 photo, VHS or DVD), along with a sample/ article from the installation. LAAA will
consider all media.

2. Three (3) 8"x10" color printouts printouts of additional artwork, properly labeled

For the festival, Receiver will be programming several art events that will range in scale and  complexity. Events will range from simple projects at intimate locations to one six week long exhibition with an opening reception to kick off the festival at Redux Contemporary Art Center in Charleston SC. The official Redux exhibition dates are March 10th to April 23rd 2011. This exhibition comes with a $2000 honorarium for an individual or a group of artists. Participating artist(s) are responsible for all installation, travel, lodging, food and shipping expenses associated with this exhibition as well as other Receiver festival events. FIRST CONTEXTS: Where Art Comes From
An International Exhibit of Works Depicting, Documenting, or Describing the
Places Where Artists Make Art

 Where does a work of art begin?

Historically, the artist? studio has served as the crucible of creation
for works of art, a zone of creativity for the artist to test, fashion,
produce, refine, and otherwise translate their visual ideas into concrete
form. Ranging from spare rooms in the corner of a basement, to renovated
barns and garages, to sun-bathed lofts with high-ceilings, the studio is
the artist? escape from the demands of life, a retreat from the fray, so
that new artworks have a chance to be born. Artist Daniel Buren has called
the studio ?he first frame of the work,?and likened it to the filter
artists put their work through before letting it loose into the world.

However, some artists have found the traditional studio, with its marginal
position divorced from daily life, a disconnected and false context for
creativity. Instead, they operate out-of-doors, literally, with their
?tudios?being fields upon which they plant their plein air easels, city
streets where they walk and interact in dynamic give-and-take fashion, and
site-specific spaces that serve as both context of origin and public
display. As Robert Storr has noted, ?he bottom line is that artists work
where they can and how they can.?

Manifest invites artists and designers of any media to submit works that
explore, depict, challenge and interpret this ?irst frame?of creativity:
the context from which art is made. Whether that originating zone is a
traditional studio, an open field, a social atmosphere, or a computer
screenŠwe invite artists to show us where it all starts.

Open to all traditional and non-traditional genre and media. Note that
works submitted to this exhibit may be straight forward 'arworks' in the
vein that an artists is already working in. Or they may be outside the
usual mode of operating for an artist who may, for example, be known for
abstract paintings, but who for this exhibit photographs (or draws) his or
her working space and chooses to share that as an entry to First Contexts.
With this in mind, we imagine that the exhibit might take on a dual nature
- one part exhibit of art or design, one part documentary of artists' work
spaces - or places where they make/find their art.

PROJECT INTENT/THEME:  The Warehouse 508 Selection Committee seeks an interior and/or exterior electronic/digital artwork situated at the Warehouse 508 teen center.  The selection committee has requested that the work be a stellar and dynamic use of cutting edge technology (hardware and software) that offers an opportunity for the youth at Warehouse 508 and the community to interact with the piece (content).  The work should be upgradeable as technology changes (infrastructure/platform) and with the interaction of Warehouse 508 staff/youth and community evolve over the life of the piece-resulting content.  The intent of the project is for the artist concept to be a starting point, with the artistic content to be developed in collaboration with youth in response to the original piece.  This artwork will serve as an access point to Warehouse 508, youth of Albuquerque, and the City of Albuquerque’s Public Art Program.  www.warehouse508.org

PROJECT FUNDS: $100,000 is available to commission a constructed and installed work of art for Warehouse 508 Project.  

Valley Metro Rail, Inc. (METRO) is seeking six Public Artists for the Light Rail Transit (LRT) Mesa Extension. 

Four experienced artists will be selected to create integrated or stand alone art commissions at light rail stations ($245,000 - $255,000 each).  Two smaller projects at a Traction Power Sub Station are suitable for emerging public artists ($35,000 each).  

Selected artists will be required to work collaboratively to develop starting-point concepts, criteria, and elements that establish a unified presence throughout the alignment.  Artwork should make riders positively aware that they are in the City of Mesa while maintaining strict standards of safety, maintenance, and operations. 
The budgets include ALL costs such as artist fees, travel, insurance, shipping, engineering, fabrication, installation and administrative expenses related to the project, including but not limited to taxes, contractors licenses, etc.  This project will include a large public component with emphasis on interaction with stakeholders.

"Girl, Please!" seeks to push and transcend the definition of gender while also exploring its relation to individual character amongst collective expectations. Bearing in mind Rupaul's statement, drag in this case is not disco, but rather an illustration of feminity and masculinity in shades of grey.

The Los Angeles County Arts Commission's Civic Art Program is seeking an artist
or artist team to execute artwork for a new 38,000 square foot community and recreation
center in Hacienda Heights, anunincorporated community in the east San Gabriel Valley.
Artwork that utilizes sustainable materials and/or demonstrates sustainable ideas
is strongly desired.

ELIGIBILITY
This commission is open to professional artists living in California, Oregon, and
Washington.

ARTWORK

Up to three finalists will receive a $1,500 honorarium to develop a conceptual proposal
for the project. Each finalist will have the opportunity to work with the project
design team to determine the best opportunities for civic art. Possible opportunities
include landscaping enhancement or earthworks in the great lawn, sculptural or functional
elements for the gateway plaza, outdoor amphitheater or walking path around the
great lawn, and paving or flooring enhancements. The selected artist, or artist
team, will work closely with the project design team to fully develop the conceptual
proposal.

BUDGET

The Civic Art allocation will not be finalized until a contractor is selected and
the project budget is finalized. However, an all-inclusive budget of $120,000 is
 projected. This budget includes artist fees, liability insurance, travel, fabrication,
delivery and installation. It is possible to coordinate integration of art elements
with the contractor.

CANVAS ARTIST SERIES CONTEST

Hyatt Hotels and Resorts and Canvas Wines, inspired by a love for fine art, wish to inspire others to share their passion of art and wine with the Canvas Artist Series. Hyatt welcomes art students in the 50 United States and D.C. to submit their artistic interpretation of the varietal characteristics of Canvas Wines: Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Merlot. One winner for each varietal wine will receive a $5,000 scholarship and have their artwork featured as a label on a special bottling of Canvas Wines.

The Environmental Artist-in-Residence program at McColl Center for Visual Art is a three month residency program in urban Charlotte, NC that encourages artists to have beneficial impacts on the natural systems in the urban environment through the creation of environmental art installations that combine art, science, community, and education. This special artist residency is founded on the principle that artists, in collaboration with other disciplines, can create remarkable works that encourage sustainability and stewardship of the environment. McColl Center for Visual Art invites artists and design professionals to submit an Expression of Interest for the inaugural Environmental Artist-in-Residence (EAIR) residency – "Watersheds”, which focuses on the watersheds of Charlotte. Future residencies will involve other environmental issues such as energy, air quality and pollution.

This means if you want to you can react to other artists work by placing your work alongside. Then when all squares are booked we take all the original pieces of work and display them in a gallery.
